What about radiators?

No longer should radiators be an imposition on the room. Economical in pressed steel, they can be sleek and minimalist or ornate and beautiful.

The advantage of radiators is that they are quick to warm up and easy to control, particularly with the new breed of TRVs (thermostatic radiator valves).

How is it better?

Radiant panel heaters offer a number of advantages over conventional heating methods. Forced–air systems, convection heaters and wood stoves etc tend to produce an uneven heat, with the highest air temperatures being near the ceiling or closest to the source. Radiant panel heating on the other hand naturally draws the heat to the floor and rises from there, resulting in more even temperatures and superior comfort without wasted energy or inflated fuel bills.

“Radiators are quick to respond to desired changes in temperature, but care must be taken to ensure they are correctly sized for the room.”

Sizing up

The size of a radiator depends on the containing room’s size and function, the number of doors or windows and the house’s insulation levels, and is calculated in BTUs (British Thermal Units), a figure which will allow you to order radiators which will provide enough heat, but not too much.

We will work it out for you!

Where to site them

As a rule, radiators work best when placed on external walls under windows and worst opposite them, but in new builds the standards of energy efficiency and airtightness are so high that you can be more flexible.

WHAT ARE MY HEAT SOURCE OPTIONS?

The most efficient way of heating the water to the panel heating is through a high efficiency boiler. These include gas, electricity, diesel and solid fuel or solar panels with a back up. As part of the selection process, it’s important to consider the ongoing running costs as well as the cost of installation. Here’s a brief overview of options:

NATURAL GAS:

If available, this provides a high energy output at a low cost. The new European boilers are 99% efficient at low water temperature, but can also produce high temperature water for radiant panel heaters and domestic hot water.

DIESEL AND SOLID FUEL:

These may be the preferred options for rural or specialist applications. They produce high temperature water for radiant panel heaters and domestic hot water. Note: these systems require storage for fuel and plant.

ELECTRICITY:

This is the cheapest and most reliable option for either a small area or low usage dwelling. Capital cost is low and maintenance is low – which can sometimes outweigh the running cost (suited to a holiday home, weekend use).

AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMPS:

This is a clean and efficient option as it is able to generate ideal low water temperatures at approximately 300% efficiency. Of course you can use a combination of these systems, or allow for the ability to retrofit to a high efficiency system at a later date.

System description

  • Wall Hung system boiler.
  • Available in LPG or Natural Gas.
  • Demrad steel panel Radiators with thermostatic control.
  • Composite pipe network by RCH System controller. This is a 24/7 timer / thermostat controller.
  • The system controller is located in the living area.

System operationThe system controller calls for heating, the boiler starts & circulates hot water from the boiler to the radiators & back again. The system controller is the master controller and the thermostatic heads on the radiators are the slave controllers. As the rooms come up to temperature the thermostatic heads close to reduce the flow through the radiator which reduces the heat output and maintains a constant temperature. When the system controller reaches set point the boiler stops. The system can be run on demand. This means your entire home will heat up within 20 minutes.

System advantages

  • Fast heat up times allows for tight control.
  • The system can be started manually or automatically on demand.
  • Individual thermostatic control on each radiator, this allows each room to be the temperature you want, and delivers total comfort.
  • This form of heating is a water filled system which means it is very quiet, clean and dust free.
  • Healthier environment.
  • Heats every corner of your home.
  • 50% of the world's population choose central heating to heat their home.
  • Overall cheaper running cost than underfloor by 30%.

System disadvantagesVisual aspects of radiators, also the restriction of furniture placements. Radiators don’t heat the floor surfaces directly. In large concrete or tiled areas, you may need to consider underfloor heating. Remember you can have a mixed system, underfloor in the areas where you have exposed floors and radiators in carpeted areas.

Additional FAQ are available at www.mckenzie.co.nz.

HEAT PUMP FAQ

Can the heatpump be mounted inside?

Heatpumps are mounted out doors only. Never indoors.

What temperature will the heatpump operate down to?

The air to water heatpump operates down to -15 degrees. At -15 the COP drops to 2:1 dropping the output by 40%. At zero degrees the COP is 3:1 and at 7 degrees the COP is 3.5:1. This is not an issue in most areas. Where you have extreme cold temperatures for long periods, a gas or diesel radiator system is more suited for these applications.

What Maintenance is required?

The Ferroli air to water heatpump is nearly maintenance free, with a service every five years. The service technician will recharge the gas in the heatpump if required.

RADIATORS FAQ

What colours do radiators come in?

Standard colour for the radiators is bone white. Towel rails can be added and these come in chrome only.

The client wants radiators but also some tiled areas as well. What are the options?

For large tiled or concrete areas 20 sqm or more, a mixed underfloor and radiators system is a better solution, using the same boiler. But for the small tiled areas, electric under tile heating is the best solution.

UNDERFLOOR SYSTEMS FAQ

Can I thermostatically control individual areas?

Yes you can. We can place room thermostats in each bedroom. But remember the system controller in the living area is your master controller and will override the room stats and close the whole system down when it reaches set point.

Can I use solar to heat my underfloor?

No, you will get better performance using solar to heat your domestic hot water.

Can I use underfloor heating with timber floors?

Timber overlays on a concrete slab is fine, there is a slightly reduced performance, but it will still heat your home effectively. With standard timber floors, underfloor heating is not suitable. Radiators are a better solution for this application.

Can I use underfloor with carpet?

There are no problems with carpeted slabs. The performance is slightly more sluggish when compared with a tiled floor, but the overall performance is more than adequate.
