WHAT ARE MY HEAT SOURCE OPTIONS?
The most efficient way of heating the water to the panel heating is through a high efficiency boiler. These include gas, electricity, diesel and solid fuel or solar panels with a back up. As part of the selection process, it’s important to consider the ongoing running costs as well as the cost of installation. Here’s a brief overview of options:
If available, this provides a high energy output at a low cost. The new European boilers are 99% efficient at low water temperature, but can also produce high temperature water for radiant panel heaters and domestic hot water.
DIESEL AND SOLID FUEL:
These may be the preferred options for rural or specialist applications. They produce high temperature water for radiant panel heaters and domestic hot water. Note: these systems require storage for fuel and plant.
This is the cheapest and most reliable option for either a small area or low usage dwelling. Capital cost is low and maintenance is low – which can sometimes outweigh the running cost (suited to a holiday home, weekend use).
AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMPS:
This is a clean and efficient option as it is able to generate ideal low water temperatures at approximately 300% efficiency. Of course you can use a combination of these systems, or allow for the ability to retrofit to a high efficiency system at a later date.
